Hiking to Everest Base Camp is one of those travel adventures that everyone seems to want to do. The reality is that few actually do it. Mostly because it’s hard. Very hard.
It’s also quite a daunting challenge to actually plan a holiday to Nepal. Particularly given the bad press the land-locked country gets. What with earthquakes and border disputes with India, Nepal is not an easy ‘flop & drop’ holiday destination. And, let’s face it, the Himalayan Mountains are intimidating. Anyone who has seen the movie Everest will probably leave the movie theatre with no desire whatsoever to put Mt Everest on their personal radar.
I certainly left feeling uncertain about my ability to hike to Base Camp. Doubts that turned out to be well-founded. The hike tested me physically and emotionally, resulting in a very unglamorous medi-vac situation resulting in an overnight stay in a Kathmandu hospital recovering from altitude sickness. But Nepal also tested me as a traveller. Which is really one of the points of travel – getting outside your comfort zone, meeting people who you wouldn’t ordinarily encounter and exploring foreign landscapes are more to the point.
Nepal, you certainly made an impact!
