Hotel review: Papyrus Guesthouse, Entebbe Uganda

by Fiona Harper

Papyrus Guesthouse is a comfortable, safe and friendly Entebbe airport hotel, just a short drive from the airport, making it a great option before gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda.

Lowdown

Papyrus Guesthouse is a low-key and comfortable stopover option near Entebbe International Airport. It is well suited to travellers arriving after a longhaul flight to Uganda or those using it as a base before heading farther afield for gorilla trekking or wildlife safaris. Papyrus does not pretend to be anything more than a comfortable, safe and friendly guesthouse. It is does all this exceptionally well, with all the essentials, a relaxed feel and a practical location for airport access. It is the perfect entry point for visiting Uganda or a wonderful last stop before you depart.

Location – Entebbe airport hotel

Papryus Guesthouse is a convenient choice for airport transfers, which makes it especially useful for first-night arrivals and final-night stays. This convenience is particularly welcome  when you arrive tired, carrying luggage, or are connecting onwards the next day. For travellers exploring Uganda more widely, it also works neatly as a soft landing before you hit the road or take flights to outer regions

Accommodation

Rooms are simple rather than showy, but they provide the comfort most travellers need upon arriving in Uganda. Beds come with heavy duty mosquito nets that wrap around the bed, there’s a functional bathroom and outdoor terrace with tables and chairs. Fans keep things cool and windows have mesh to keep bugs out. Filtered water is provided for drinking and teeth brushing.

The overall feel is calm and relaxed, with the garden setting providing a tranquil ambience. One thing to note is that access to the room involved stairs, and the lighting was poor enough to feel a little unsafe after dark.

Facilities

An open-sided dining area overlooks the gardens and functions as the central hub of the guesthouse. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at additional cost. There’s a gazebo bar in the garden with sitting areas connected with paths. The garden setting adds a pleasant sense of space and greenery without making the property feel overly formal.

Food & Drink

The menu draws on Ugandan flavours, such as local breakfast favourite known as a rolex – short for rolled eggs. This is a beloved street-food of soft chapati rolled around a freshly cooked omelette and packed with chopped vegetables. It is hearty and satisfying, with the chapati adding a flaky, slightly rich base and the egg filling bringing softness and flavour. Meals are oversized with generous portions. Lunch was a highlight, with the beef served tender and succulent. Cold beers were something else I enjoyed (Nile lager was my personal favourite), especially the selection of local brews, best enjoyed on the patio overlooking the lush garden and stands of towering bamboo.

Explore

This is less a destination property than a sensible stopover, but its setting makes it easy to ease into Uganda or wind down at the end of a trip. Its surburban location mThe garden and bamboo plantings give the guesthouse a peaceful backdrop that encourages a slower pace. For many travellers, that quiet first or last night is exactly the point.

What we loved

The staff were exceptional and consistently attentive, with a genuine willingness to help with any request. That level of service makes a big difference when you are arriving exhausted or trying to coordinate transport and onward plans. The convenience to the airport was also a major plus, especially after a longhaul flight into Uganda.

What we didn’t love so much

The stairs up to the room were not ideal, particularly because the lighting was poor and made the approach feel a little unsafe. It is a practical issue rather than a deal-breaker, but it is worth noting for anyone with mobility concerns or late-night arrivals.
