The story behind the photographs

Capturing photographs from my travels around the world, I love the serendipity of heading out for an adventure to see what I may discover.

Often I will have a vague plan regarding what I want to photograph, though as a travel writer & photographer, I’m also content to let things evolve and photograph organically.

If I’m on a specific assignment and writing or photographing to a brief, my workflow is much more structured and I’ll plan for the best times and places to capture the best images.

If I’m focusing on creative or self-portrait photography with a particular image or outcome in mind, I’ll plan things minutely. I’ll be thinking about lighting, props, location, time of day, legalities and the environment I plan on shooting in.

The equipment that I use

My main camera is a Canon 5DM4 with my go-to lens being a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 ( I absolutely LOVE this lens!). I also travel with a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L which works for wide-angle, as it did in the shot of Fred in his woodshed.

Usually I travel with a Manfrotto tripod which is compact enough for fitting into a backpack yet sturdy enough to carry a heavy DSLR. I also have a monopod for supporting my Canon EF 100-400mm f.45-5.6 lens.

I’ve used a number of DJI Mavic drones but the one I like best is the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and I really like the RSLOCO Hardcase for storing the drone and all its associated batteries and charging gear.

For calibrating my screens once I start the editing process I recommend either of these products:

Calibrate ColourChecker (sells for approx AUD250)

Datacolour SpyderX Pro (retails for approx AUD260)

Software that I use and recommend

I use Adobe Lightroom (it’s awesome for cataloguing, keywording and managing database folders) for initial editing. Secondary editing, if and when required, is one in any one of these programs:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Landscape Pro by Anthropics
  • Portrait Pro by Anthropics
  • Luminar 4 by Skylum
  • Luminar AI by Skylum
  • Aurora HDR
  • Topaz Gigapixel
  • Topaz Sharpen
  • Topaz Denoise
